Önismeret és művészetterápia 1.

welcoming_autumn_instagram_post_2.jpg

Mi a jelen valósága?

az-emberi-termeszetsotetoldaladeakzs20121027-6-638.jpg

A fejlődés lehetőségének
kulcsa, a Self-hez való kapcsolódás. Az önismeret célja ezen komplexusok felismerése. A fejlődés kulcsa a komplexusokkal való munka. Másik oldalról nézve a komplexusok olyan pszichés “entitások”, alakká formálódott lélekrészek, melyek nem a tudatos én kontrollja alá tartoznak, öntudatlanul működnek a tudatban. Ábrán látható, a belső “magot” több egymástól eltérő réteg veszi körül. Ezek egyéni, családi és kollektív rétegek, melyek egymással összefüggésben tartalmazzák a személyhez kötődő archetípusokat. A kollektív rétegben fellelhetőek az adott kultúrához és népcsoporthoz kötődő szokások, melyek generációról generációra adódtak tovább. Ebbe szorosan fonódik a családi tudattalan, a családrendszeren belüli konfliktusokkal, egyéni traumákkal, titkokkal, veszteségekkel. Ehhez kapcsolódik a személyes réteg, egyéni elfojtásokkal, szükségletekkel és vágyakkal. Minél több az elfojtott tartalmakra elhasznált energia, annál kevesebb szabad életenergia áll a személy rendelkezésére. A Persona azon szerepszemélyiség, melyet a társadalmi együttműködés kíván meg mindannyiunktól, ezek nélkül képtelenek lennénk az együttműködésre családi és társadalmi szinten. A Personával, azaz szerepeinkkel való azonosulásunk szoros kapcsolatban áll az árnyék részünkkel. Az önismereti munka által tudatosabban használhatjuk szerepeinket, és egyre inkább kapcsolódhatunk belső magunkhoz, a Selfhez, lehetünk egyre inkább önmagunk a jelen eseményeire.

The Concept of Self-Awareness

In this post, I have selected excerpts from my thesis to create a literature-based conceptual foundation for understanding self-awareness – a foundation on which I build my creative workshop sessions. I will continue this series, gradually showing how all of these ideas are translated into practice, point by point, step by step.

The Concept of Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is a widely used concept today, although its origins can be traced back to Socrates and the ancient Greek maxim Gnothi seauton – “Know thyself.”

Our relationship with ourselves, however, has changed across cultures and historical periods. In contemporary society, self-awareness refers to becoming conscious of one’s inner world, including emotions, thoughts, motivations, and patterns of behaviour. This awareness makes emotional regulation, personal development, and the shaping of interpersonal relationships possible.

Self-awareness can be understood as the awareness that develops during a therapeutic process, including the recognition of how these patterns influence our personal decisions and relationships, where these patterns originate, and whether and how they can be changed – or, alternatively, accepted as something that cannot be changed (Tóth, 2017).

In my thesis, I highlight the perspectives of Freud and Jung within analytical psychology, as well as Carl Rogers from the humanistic tradition, as theorists whose ideas have had a particularly strong influence on the understanding of the human being around the turn of the millennium.

I also explore the Johari Window as a framework for self-awareness and as a possible guiding principle for self-reflection. I will return to this topic in the next post, together with Integral Psychology and Wilber’s four-quadrant model.

From Freud to Jung

Freud’s model of personality, based on the three-part structure of the id, ego, and superego, is transformed in Jung’s work. Jung reorganises this structure around the concept of the Self, which, in its integrated form, encompasses both conscious and unconscious aspects of the psyche. He refers to the process of this integration and development as individuation.

One of Jung’s key concepts in relation to self-awareness is the Self. Through the recognition and integration of an increasing number of Shadow aspects, the individual can move towards psychological development and a greater sense of inner balance.

Jung introduced the concept of the collective unconscious into the field of psychology, together with the work with archetypes, which later became an important guiding principle in fairy-tale therapy.

Jung identified four fundamental psychological functions: thinking, feeling, sensation, and intuition. The way these functions operate in relation to one another has a significant influence on our experience of life. Recognising their mechanisms can therefore become an important pillar of self-awareness, as they influence our behaviour, emotions, and relationships.

Sensation – Here and Now

The function of sensation is connected to the here and now: recognising the present moment, becoming aware of the body, and maintaining a sense of reality rather than becoming lost in a world of fantasy.

At a practical level, the self-awareness question connected to this function might be:

What am I feeling in my body here and now?
What is the reality of the present moment?

Feeling – What Does This Mean to Me?

The function of feeling asks:

What does this mean to me?
What kind of feeling does this evoke in me?

Jung is not calling us to become overly emotional. Rather, he draws our attention to becoming conscious of our feelings. In the present context, complex art therapy provides a means through which emerging emotions can be expressed and made conscious.

When working with emotions, it is important not only to identify or name them, but also to experience them and establish a relationship with them.

Intuition – What Could This Be?

Intuition refers to an inner process through which impressions and information become accessible that cannot necessarily be reached through conscious cognitive thinking.

Intuition can reveal previously hidden connections and relationships. In self-awareness work, this can be one of the most exciting areas, because accessing it may open the way to inner changes.

Its questions might be:

What could this be?
What direction might it be pointing towards?
Where could it lead me?

Thinking – Why Is This Happening?

Thinking is the logical function of the mind. It asks:

Why is this happening?
What is the reason behind it?

It provides the possibility of solving problems on a rational level. However, when thinking becomes dominant, access to emotions and intuition may decrease, and problem-solving can remain primarily on the surface level.

Within an art therapy process, this function becomes particularly significant towards the end, when experiences are reflected upon and a possible next step is identified.

The Four Functions and Self-Awareness

The four psychological functions appear in different relationships throughout the development of our personality. From the perspective of self-awareness, the aim is therefore to explore and understand how these functions are present in us here and now, how appropriately they are operating in a given stage of life, and how they might be brought into greater harmony.

The experiences and insights gained through self-awareness processes can support us in moving towards a life that is increasingly authentic and aligned with who we are.

Complexes, the Shadow and the Self

Another important Jungian concept is the complex (Jung, 2024), which also became one of the fundamental concepts incorporated into the fairy-tale therapy method developed by Márta Antalfai (Antalfai, 2016).

Complexes can be understood as focal points of psychic activity. Here, however, the concept does not carry the same meaning that the word complex has in everyday language.

A key to the possibility of development lies in establishing a connection with the Self. One of the aims of self-awareness is therefore to recognise these complexes, while working with them can become an important pathway for psychological development.

From another perspective, complexes can be understood as psychic “entities” or parts of the psyche that have taken shape as distinct patterns. They do not belong entirely to the conscious ego and can operate outside conscious awareness.

The self-awareness process can help us recognise and become conscious of these Shadow aspects, because they may either support us or hinder and sabotage us in our efforts to live an authentic life.

Bringing repressed Shadow aspects into awareness and connecting them with the appropriate archetypal patterns therefore becomes a central element of inner work.

As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the inner “core” is surrounded by several distinct layers. These can be understood as individual, family, and collective layers, which contain archetypal patterns connected to the individual and are interrelated with one another.

Within the collective layer are traditions and patterns of behaviour connected to a particular culture or population, passed down from one generation to another.

Closely intertwined with this is the family unconscious, which may contain conflicts within the family system, individual traumas, secrets, and losses.

This is connected to the personal layer, which includes individual repressions, needs, and desires.

The more psychological energy is invested in keeping repressed contents out of awareness, the less freely available life energy remains to the individual.

Persona and Authenticity

The Persona represents the role-based aspects of personality that social interaction requires from all of us. Without these roles, cooperation at both family and societal levels would be extremely difficult.

Our identification with the Persona – that is, with the roles we occupy – is closely connected to our Shadow aspects.

Through self-awareness work, we can learn to use our roles more consciously while gradually establishing a deeper connection with our inner core, the Self.

In this way, we may become increasingly capable of being ourselves while responding authentically to the events and circumstances of the present moment.
